Priyanka is not the only one to become a mother with the help of surrogacy technique. Earlier, many stars like Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor and Tusshar Kapoor have become parents with the help of surrogacy. Let us tell you what is surrogacy and what are its rules in India.

What Is Surrogacy?

When a couple rents another woman’s womb to have a child, this process is called surrogacy. That is, in surrogacy, a woman becomes pregnant for another couple through her or donor’s eggs. There are many reasons behind having a child through surrogacy.

For example, if the couple has any medical-related problem, there is a possibility of a woman’s life being threatened or any problem due to pregnancy, or if a woman herself does not want to have a child. A woman who raises another’s child in her womb is called a surrogate mother.

For surrogacy, an agreement is made between the couple wishing to have a child and the surrogate mother. Under this, the legal parents of a child born out of pregnancy are the only couples who undergo surrogacy. The surrogate mother is given money to take care of herself during pregnancy and for medical needs so that she can take care of herself during pregnancy.

Two Types Of Surrogacy

There are two types of surrogacy. A traditional surrogacy in which the sperm of the father or donor is matched with the eggs of the surrogate mother. In this surrogacy, the surrogate mother is the biological mother. And the second gestational surrogacy in which the surrogate mother is not genetically related to the child. That is, the surrogate mother’s egg is not used in pregnancy. In this, the surrogate mother is not the biological mother of the child. She only gives birth to a child. In this, the combination of the father’s sperm and the mother’s eggs or the donor’s sperm and eggs is done after getting a test tube, it is transplanted into the uterus of the surrogate mother.

Surrogacy Rules In India

In India, many rules have been set to prevent the misuse of surrogacy. Most of the poor women became surrogate mothers due to financial difficulties. This type of commercial surrogacy has now been banned by the government. Commercial surrogacy was banned in 2019 itself. After which the option of surrogacy is left open only to help. Along with banning commercial surrogacy, the new bill also tightened the rules and regulations regarding ulnaristic surrogacy.

Under this, the avenues of surrogacy have been closed for foreigners, single parents, divorced couples, live-in partners and people belonging to the LGBT community. For surrogacy, the surrogate mother must have a medically fit certificate, only then she can become a surrogate mother. On the other hand, couples who resort to surrogacy should have a medical certificate that they are infertile.

However, a number of reforms were made in the Surrogacy Regulation Bill 2020. In this, any ‘interested’ woman was allowed to be a surrogate.

Surrogacy Cases Increased During The Corona Period

The number of surrogate mothers has also increased due to the recession and unemployment for the last two years after the Corona epidemic. Women who do broom-mopping, utensils or minor work in the homes of others or women who work in the factory have adopted surrogacy to earn more money in less time. To secure the future of the family, to take proper care of the children and to bear the expenses of education or treatment of someone, the women of the younger class see an easy way to earn money from surrogacy.
